Motel Burglar Nabbed

An intruder was arrested early Sunday morning after police officers found him inside a motel room, leaning over the sleeping occupant.

Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were dispatched to Traveler’s Motel on North Locust Avenue shortly after 4:00 a.m. The manager told officers that she was concerned about the well being of a guest because a man had been demanding access to her room.

The manager reported that the man had been beating upon the guest’s door since around 2:30 a.m. He reportedly told the manager that he was a relative and refused to leave the premises.

Officers were at first unable to locate the man. They quickly realized, however, that he had made entry to the room around an air conditioning unit.

Officers report they could see the suspect standing over where the woman was sleeping in bed. They shined their flashlights on him and ordered him to open the door. They indicate the man came onto the porch and shut the door behind him.

When they awakened the sleeping woman, she indicated she had not known the man was inside her room, nor had she given him permission to enter.

Officers found the woman’s purse underneath the bed, next to where the man had been standing. The victim indicated that she had placed the purse on the other side of the bed before going to sleep.

Melvin Dewayne Griggs, age 23, of 1006 Circle Road, Waynesboro, was then placed under arrest on charges of vandalism and aggravated burglary. Inside his vehicle, officers reported finding a large red tool box. They soon learned that a resident of Waynesboro had reported the items stolen on the previous date.
